Kanzan is one of the most popular Japanese flowering cherry blossom trees.
In March and April, it produces masses of eye-catching pink, double flowers with a striking frilly edge to them. After flowering, bronze leaves begin to unfurl. The foliage then turns mid-green before changing to a stunning burnt orange in autumn.
HOW BIG WILL IT GROW?
Kanzan is a medium-sized tree that will grow to an estimated 6 x 4 metres in 20 years. It’s suited to most sites, but avoid very wet or shallow, chalky soil.
HOW TO PLANT A KANZAN CHERRY BLOSSOM TREE
When planting any cherry blossom tree, choose a spot that’s protected from strong winds as you don’t want your display of spring flowers to blow away.
Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and one and a half times its width. Loosen the roots and place the tree in the hole. Refill with half the original soil and half compost. Firm around gently but don’t bank the soil up around the collar of the tree.
You may want to tie the tree to a stake initially for support.
